Weathered Oil on Alabama Beach

BP oil pollution

Aerial of ridge lines of weathering oil pollution exposed just above the general high tide line on the Gulf coast beach at Fort Morgan - Wednesday Dec. 29, 2010.

A SouthWings flight with pilot Tom Hutchings along the Alabama/Florida coast had been planned for Wednesday anyway, so on the way out of Mobile Bay we looped along the beach at Fort Morgan.  I wanted to show Tom what we had found the day before on the ground (see previous blog post) and also see how clearly the oil pollution could be seen from the air.  From a few hundred feet above the beach the length of the pollution is clear.  Weathering oil we had discovered on the beach at Fort Morgan appears from the air as long coppery ridges against the usually white Alabama beach sand.
